February is Random Acts of Kindness month, it's also Valentine’s Day. Yes, February is the month where we should be intentional about spreading kindness to all and showing love to those who matter most in our lives.
But what if we were intentional rather than random?
When it comes to the relationships that matter most, random is good, but intentional is always much better, so how can we apply that to our work at school?
Take one minute to give parents something that will change them forever.
What is something that almost every parent has never received from their child’s teacher?
The answer is pretty simple. A phone call from the school with no purpose other than to say thank you.
I’ve had four children go to school and I never received a call from the school that said thank you and that is it.
Thank you without a concern.
Thank you without an issue.
Thank you without an reminder.
Thank you without her request.
Just thank you.
If I'm honest, I didn't do it as a teacher or leader, and as I reflected on that, I thought.
What if parents received a phone call from you and in one minute you just say one of the following things."
A. Thank you for all that you do for your child. He is a joy to teach.
B. Thank you for always taking my call about Your daughter. It really means a lot to me that you take my call.
C. Thank you for emailing me your concerns about your son feels in my class.
D. Thank you for the example you set for your child. She is a delight to have in my class.
A Call to Intentional Kindness
This month, we have lots of opportunities to make a deliberate and intentional call that could change lives. We have many 1-minute opportunities to call parents and surprise them with an amazing gift, a call with no motive other than to lift them up.
Intentional Call Strategies
Call one parent per day in your home room class.
Call the parents of the most at-risk students you teach.
Call your own family members or close friends.
Call leaders in your school thanking them for their leadership.
Leaders - Call 20 spouses of your staff, thanking them for their support.
Kind Words are Good for the Soul
February can be a depressing month because people don’t feel loved or appreciated. You may even feel that way, yourself. In this difficult world, we are called to make it better. We are called to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14). We are called to spread kind words for they “are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Proverbs 16:24.
